She is a painter, despite believing for years that she could become someone else, but painting proved to be the one thing that stayed. She also writes.
GAN Lu’s practices source from a shared memory between herself and the rest of world. As Louise Gluck writes, ‘We look at the world once, in childhood. The rest is memory’. Her paintings draw upon fragmented recollections, everyday sources and psychological space, forming a Visual Domain situated between experiences and imagination, marked by a small sense of unease.
She continues the drawing habits developed since childhood at the age of six, rendering objects through simplified lines and deliberately preserving the traces of each brushstroke on the canvas, allowing the act of painting itself to remain visible. Through this approach, she invites audiences to observe nature, the world, and ongoing realities from a perspective that departs from conventional logic.
